Apple today released an update regarding its subscription businesses and its global App Store, revealing that the company has paid an unprecedented 320 billion in app development fees since 2008.which is a figure that represents the amount of revenue generated by apps without the Apple commission. Additionally Apple said that it has over 990 million subscriptions paid for across Apple services including subscriptions to the App Store accounting for the most “significant” part of that amount.
The Apple App Store in 2022 was facing one of the most difficult years since its creation which included antitrust lawsuits and lawsuits that were aimed at restricting its market share. It is believed that the U.S. Department of Justice is believed to be in the beginning stages of filing an antitrust suit against Apple and is intervening in the Apple-Epic Games antitrust case recently to make clear to the court that the initial ruling that had ruled the fact that Apple wasn’t a monopolist was not interpreted correctly by the antitrust law. The U.K. is also investigating the duopoly between Android and iOS, with particular attention paid to cloud-based browsers and gaming services.
For instance, in the Netherlands, it had to conform to an antitrust ruling which allowed dating apps to make use of third-party payment services. A variety of European nations are examining the App tracking transparency framework to determine antitrust violations. Last month Apple loosen its hold on App Pricing in the Store with a launch of 700 price points along with rules that allow developers to set prices that don’t exceed $0.99 to address concerns that Apple doesn’t allow developers to manage their own businesses in the way they choose due to an action class-action lawsuit against U.S. App developers which was settled in 2021.
