Reddit will begin charging users for the use of its API

The API of Reddit will remain open to developers who wish to create bots and apps to help users use Reddit as well as to researchers looking to research Reddit exclusively for research or for non-commercial reasons.

But those who “crawl” Reddit for data and “don’t return any of that value” to users will need to pony for the privilege,” Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman told The Times.”It’s a good time for us to tighten things up,” Huffman stated. “We think that’s fair.”

Reddit seeks ways to monetize its massive variety of user-generated content that, as The Times notes have been often used to train prominent machine learning models that generate text like the OpenAI’s ChatGPT or GPT-4. As of 2019, Reddit had over 430 million monthly active users across more than 1.2 million special interest communities, and 138,000 are active.

Reddit today announced it is planning to incorporate more AI into the way it is run, including identifying the usage of AI-generated content on Reddit and also adding a label that informs users that a post may have originated from bots. Reddit will also work to enhance its moderation tools, as well as bots from third-party companies that assist moderators keep tabs on the forums.

Reddit hasn’t yet announced the details about its API pricing as of yet. The company is however preparing for an eventual initial public offering later in the year. investors will be seeking the possibility of growth in completely new streams of revenue.
