Reddit has been testing channels like Discord to facilitate

Reddit announced on Thursday that it was trying out Discord chat rooms in certain subreddits. In this way, the social media platform is seeking to provide more opportunities for community members to connect with one another, besides the traditional synchronous commenting system.

The company announced that it will be in the process of launching this test with a group of 25 subreddits that are volunteers The company did not provide a list of the subreddits. The company said that the communities that are participating are smaller than 100,000 members. Reddit announced that channels will remain on the navigation bar of the community to allow users to revisit the channels often.

The company stated that the lessons it learned through its previous chat services, such as the Discord chat rooms for community members, were discontinued in 2020. Particularly, it is planning to give greater ability to control moderators. It will come with an exclusive channel for moderators to talk about the management of the subreddit. In addition, they’ll be able to decide if they wish to allow this feature to the community at all.

Furthermore, it gives moderators tools such as the ability to decide who can be part of chats, monitor the chat queue, and even moderate messages that are reported within a chat.

In the mod news subreddit, the social media network announced plans to add features to channels, such as threading pin messages, threaded messages, user-generated mentions and push notifications, and editing of messages that will be available to senders in the coming years.
