Imgur will ban explicit images on its platform this month

Image hosting service Imgur has scheduled to remove explicit images from its platform on May 15. The company revised its conditions of service and announced that it would focus on eliminating “nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content” from the platform later in the month.

The MediaLab-owned company stated explicit content poses a risk for the Imgur “community and its business” and that removing it could “protect the future of the Imgur community.”

The website hosting image content has stated that it will allow the use of artistic nudity, however as it’s moving to a combination of automatic and human-moderated moderation, there could be problems uploading some content.

In the year 2018, Imgur removed images and search queries relating to the NSFW community Reddit on its website. The company stated explicit images would be allowed, but they needed to be identified by the word “hidden”.

In addition to images that are explicit, Imgur is also removing older and inactive photos that aren’t linked with an account. A Twitter user pointed out Imgur has been extensively used to upload images without an account and share links to various websites. The removal of those images could result in lots of dead links across the web.
