Recently an acquaintance who had been using Gmail for an extended period could see the chat settings in the upper right-hand corner of the web application. The notice was included on the Gmail page around 2 years back after Google Chat came into Gmail. It informs anyone you’ve ever had the pleasure of using Chat with to let them know whether you’re on the device (or telephone) and available or not.

This will set your status away and remain in effect until you change it.
You can also choose your availability and then create a custom notification on your phone by using the Gmail application for iOS and Android. Make sure that no matter where you choose your status it will show across all devices connected to that identical Google account.
