Google has announced Google DeepMind as a new division comprising the DeepMind team and Google Brain, the Google Brain team from Google Research. In the blog post, DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis announced that Google DeepMind will work “in close collaboration across all Google products” in order to “deliver AI research and products.”
As part of Google DeepMind’s development, Google says it’ll form a new scientific committee to oversee the progress of research and direction of the department and will be headed by Koray Kavukcuoglu, the VP for research and development at DeepMind. Eli Collins, VP of products at Google Research, will join Google DeepMind as VP of products.
Additionally, Jeff Dean, one of the co-founders of Google Brain, will take the chief scientist job at the two companies, Google Research and Google Deep Mind which will report directly to Google the CEO Sundar Pichai. Google Research remains an independent department that reports the Google Technology and Society SVP James Manyika and will focus on “fundamental advances in computer science across areas such as algorithms and theory, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and sustainability and responsible AI.”

By launching Google Deep Mind, we are uniting our world-class talents in AI and computational power, the infrastructure, and resources to build an era of AI breakthroughs and products that span Google and Alphabet and doing this in a responsible and bold manner,” Hassabis wrote. “The work we are going to be doing now as part of this new combined unit will create the next wave of world-changing breakthroughs.”
Recently, DeepMind has taken on an increased role in Alphabet since the firm seeks to take on rivals like Microsoft as well as OpenAI within the competition to develop revenue-generating AI.
